Soil, testing procedures and testing equipment - Determination of water absorption
Baugrund, Versuche und Versuchsgeräte - Bestimmung des Wasseraufnahmevermögens
Overview
This standard applies in earthworks and foundations. Using the testing procedure specified in this standard the water absorption of the fine fractions of a soil is determined. The water absorption is dependent on the specific surface of the fine particles and on the activity of the clay minerals. The testing procedure provides an index value which is correlated to the soil mechanics characteristics, such as, for instance, flow and plastic limit, swelling and shrinking values and is therefore suitable for assessment of soils used for structural purposes as well as assessment of mineral construction materials, for instance, bentonites for sealing purposes. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 005-05-03 AA "Baugrund; Laborversuche (SpA zu CEN/TC 341/WG 6)" ("Laboratory tests on soils (Mirror Committee of CEN/TC 341/WG 6)") at DIN.
