Testing of fuel oil - Spectrophotometric determination of the red dye content in domestic fuel oil
Prüfung von Heizöl - Spektralphotometrische Bestimmung des Rotfarbstoffgehalts in leichtem Heizöl
Overview
This document has been prepared by Working Committee NA 062-06-42 AA "Motorische Prüfung von flüssigen Kraftstoffen" ("Engine testing of liquid fuels") of the Fachausschuss Mineralöl- und Brennstoffnormung (FAM) (Standardization Committee for petroleum, fuels, lubricants and related products (FAM)) of the Materials Testing Standards Committee (NMP).
Method 1 is intended for determination of the red dye content in domestic fuel oil. In addition to the labelled sample, the same fuel oil without addition of red dye shall be provided as reference. This method is particularly suitable for testing of correct labelling of domestic fuel oils in labelling businesses. It is not suitable for detection of misuse of domestic fuel oil as diesel.
Methods 2a and 2b are intended for determination of red dye content in domestic fuel oil, diesel and mixtures thereof. For this purpose, no unlabelled sample is necessary as reference. These methods are suitable for testing the labelling of domestic fuel oils and for detection of misuse of domestic fuel oil as diesel.
The scope is limited to red dyes which are permitted by law to label fuel oils in the Federal Republic of Germany.
The determination can be interfered by bio-components (FAME, vegetable oil, amongst others) (premature elution of the red dyes from the cartridge/column).
Dye concentrates can be examined after appropriate dilution.
