Testing of liquid mineral hydrocarbons - Determination of mercaptan sulfur content - Potentiometric method
Prüfung von flüssigen Mineralöl-Kohlenwasserstoffen - Bestimmung des Gehaltes an Mercaptanschwefel - Potentiometrisches Verfahren
Overview
This document has been prepared by NA 062-06-42 AA "Anforderungen an flüssige Kraftstoffe" ("Testing of liquid fuels and fuel oils") of the Petroleum, Fuels, Lubricants and Related Products Standardization Committee (FAM) at the Materials Testing Standards Committee (NMP) at DIN. This document specifies a method for the determination of the mercaptan sulphur content in the range of 3 mg/kg to 100 mg/kg in liquid mineral hydrocarbons in the boiling range of gasolines and diesel fuels using a potentiometric method. In many cases it is important to know the mercaptan sulphur content because mercaptans impair the smell, are corrosive in high concentrations and can have a damaging influence on plastics. In contrast to hydrogen sulphide, which must be removed before the determination according to this method, sulphides, disulphides, thiophens and elemental sulphur with contents of less than 5 mg/kg have no negative effect on the determination.
