Overview
This supplement has been prepared by Working Committee NA 031-04-09 AA "Sonstige Ausrüstung - SpA zu CEN/TC 192/WG 5" ("Other equipment - Mirror Committee of CEN/TC 192/WG 5") of the Firefighting and Fire Protection Standards Committee (FNFW) and supplements the standard harmonized on a European level for portable ladders for fire service use, DIN EN 1147. During the preparation of DIN EN 1147 account was taken of the fact that it may be necessary for certain countries to specify additional requirements as portable ladders for fire service are used differently throughout Europe. For this reason Working Committee NA 031-04-09 AA has decided to include information which is not covered by DIN EN 1147, but which is nationally necessary in this supplement to DIN EN 1147. Due to the increased requirements, especially during technical application of the fire services, the ladder family has already been supplemented by a multifunction ladder in the previous edition of November 2003. It is intended to constitute a useful supplementation of the rescue ladders; it is also intended for special uses which cannot be fully or partially covered by conventional sectional, extending or hook ladders for fire-service. They can be used, for example, as standing ladders, leaning ladders in connection with a rescue platform, hook ladder on bridges or balconies, as roof ladders. Triggered by an accident during use of a connector for a sectional ladder (this has not been normatively specified) for the creation of a trestle ladder, Working Committee NA 031-04-09 AA has once again intensively checked all sectional ladder dimensions. It was discovered that the standard compliant, arithmetical use of all tolerances cannot prevent sectional ladder parts of various manufacturers from sliding apart. This also applies for application of connectors for sectional ladders coupled with sectional ladder parts of various manufacturers. In order to ensure that it is prevented that parts slide apart in the future, this Supplement to DIN EN 1147 had to be amended in particular with regard to the spring plunger latch dimensions. Furthermore, the connector for sectional ladders has been incorporated into this Supplement. In total, the following modifications have been made with regard to DIN EN 1147, Supplement 1:2003-11: a) the foreword has been completely revised and the patent notice with regard to multifunction ladders has been incorporated in the introduction; b) connector for the sectional ladder has been incorporated; c) the spring plunger latch dimensions for the sectional ladder have been modified; d) DIN 931-2 and DIN EN 697 have been deleted and DIN EN ISO 1141, DIN EN ISO 4014 and DIN EN ISO 4017 have been incorporated in the normative references; e) content has been editorially revised. Application of the specifications of this supplement for NA 031-04-09 AA is recommended for Germany. Furthermore, FNFW Working Committee (WC) NA 031-04-09 AA recommends to use each ladder designation given in this Supplement, as no designation is specified in DIN EN 1147.
