DKE German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies of DIN and VDE

Overview

When designing electrical products the risk of fire and the potential hazards associated with fires shall be taken into consideration and minimized as far as possible through the dimensioning of components, the design of the circuit and the choice of materials. The fundamental aim is to prevent ignition or, if necessary, to contain the spread of fire and harmful combustion gases. Part 11-5 of DIN EN 60695 describes a needle-flame test to simulate the effect of small flames such as those that can occur in electrical products due to faulty operating conditions. The severity levels indicated are based on the duration of exposure to the flame. The possible risk of fire can then be assessed according to given criteria. This new edition presents revisions, mainly regarding the extension to include the testing of small external flames, a test concept, the test fuel and the copper block material specification. An example of a possible assignment of the test specification is also shown. IEC 60695-11-5 is a generic safety standard. It is intended for technical committees for implementation in standards and is in line with IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. Application-specific incorporation of this basic safety standard is then the responsibility of the respective technical committee. The responsible committee is DKE/K 133 "Prüfverfahren und Beurteilung der Brandgefahr von elektronischen Produkten und Isolierstoffen" ("Fire hazard testing of electronic products and insulating material") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
