Overview

International Standards specifying the properties and test methods of radiation protection dosemeters to be used in pulsed fields of ionizing radiation are required due to the increasing use of pulsed radiation in medicine and industry. A prerequisite for such International Standards is the availability of the required reference fields for pulsed radiation. This Technical Specification provides the necessary information for such reference fields. The concept is based on the existing standards for radiation qualities defined in ISO or IEC standards. It only adds the parameters of the pulsed field and gives some guidance for their determination. Therefore, no new radiation qualities are defined, but only the connection between the parameters for pulsed radiation and the parameters for continuous radiation is given. The main parameters required for pulsed fields are the duration, the air kerma and the air kerma power of the radiation pulse and, in the case of repeated pulses, their repetition frequency. The responsible committee is DKE/GK 852 "Strahlenschutzdosimeter" ("Radiation protection devices") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
