Fixed capacitors for use in electronic equipment - Part 14: Sectional specification - Fixed capacitors for electromagnetic interference suppression and connection to the supply mains (IEC 60384-14:2013/A1:2016); German version EN 60384-14:2013/A1:2016

Title (German)

Festkondensatoren zur Verwendung in Geräten der Elektronik - Teil 14: Rahmenspezifikation - Festkondensatoren zur Unterdrückung elektromagnetischer Störungen, geeignet für Netzbetrieb (IEC 60384-14:2013/A1:2016); Deutsche Fassung EN 60384-14:2013/A1:2016

Overview

Part 14 of IEC 60384 applies to capacitors and resistor-capacitor combinations which will be connected to an AC mains or other supply with nominal voltage not exceeding 1 000 V AC (RMS) or 1 500 V DC, and with a nominal frequency not exceeding 100 Hz. This part of IEC 60384 specifies the preferred ratings and characteristics for the type of capacitor described, selects the appropriate quality assessment procedures, tests and measuring methods from IEC 60384-1 and specifies general performance requirements for this type of capacitor. Test severities and requirements prescribed in detail specifications referring to this sectional specification will be of equal or higher performance level; lower performance levels are not permitted. This document also provides a schedule of safety tests to be used by national testing stations in countries where approval by such stations is required. The overvoltage categories in combination with the AC mains voltages for the capacitors classified in this document should be taken from IEC 60664-1. Requirements for safety-tested AC capacitors for use in DC applications are given in Annex H. Requirements for capacitors for use in high humidity applications are given in Annex I. RFI suppression capacitors are AC capacitors designed to suppress electromagnetic interference caused by electrical and electronic equipment or other sources. A class X capacitor or class X RC combination is a capacitor or RC combination suitable for applications where its failure will not result in a dangerous electric shock but may cause fire. A class Y capacitor or class Y RC combination is a capacitor or RC combination suitable for applications in which the failure of the capacitor could lead to a dangerous electric shock. Class X capacitors are divided into two subclasses according to the peak voltages of pulses to which they may be exposed during operation in addition to the mains voltage. Such pulses can be caused by lightning strikes in overhead lines, switching operations in neighboring devices or in the device that is suppressed by the capacitor. Class Y capacitors are divided into the three subclasses Y1, Y2 and Y4. The responsible committee is DKE/K 623 "Funk-Entstörmittel" ("Capacitors and resistors for electronic equipment") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
