DIN EN 62760
Audio reproduction method for normalized loudness level (IEC 62760:2016); German version EN 62760:2016
Audio-Wiedergabeverfahren für normalisierten Lautstärkepegel (IEC 62760:2016); Deutsche Fassung EN 62760:2016
Overview
The loudness level of an audio reproduction is variable depending on the level of the input source and whether it is mono, stereo or multi-channel. Without a suitable automatic control, users will be forced to adjust the volume of their device appropriately when they select a different source or reproduction mode such as mono, stereo or downmix. There are some special adjustment options for consumer devices, but they are not standardized. For broadcast audio, broadcast studios apply loudness level measurements and set a reference level for the audio content according to ITU-R BS.1770 and ITU-R BS.1864; the first standardization project for loudness level in broadcasting. It is expected that audio loudness levels for other services will also be standardized. Broadcast audio at specified loudness levels can be reproduced correctly with suitably adjusted reproduction systems and equipment. This International Standard specifies the reproduction method with level settings by channel mode and other specifications, resulting in improved listening quality for the user. This method is also suitable for various audio contents other than broadcast sound. This International Standard is applicable to electrical signal levels and excludes acoustic audio levels from loudspeakers. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 742.5 "Lautsprecher" ("Loudspeakers") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
