Overview
When designing electrotechnical products, the risk of fire as well as the potential hazards associated with fires shall be taken into consideration and minimized as far as possible by dimensioning components, designing the circuitry and selecting materials. The basic principle is to prevent any ignition or, if necessary, to contain the spread of fire and harmful fire gases. Part -11-11, a technical specification of IEC 60695, describes a test method used to determine the characteristic heat flux for ignition (CHFI) from a nearby non-contacting flame source. It provides a relationship between ignition time and incident heat flux. A test specimen cut from an end-product or subassembly can be tested by this test method. IEC 60695-11-11 is a basic safety standard. It is intended for technical committees for implementation in standards and is consistent with IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. Application-specific integration of this basic safety standard is then the responsibility of the respective technical committee. The committee responsible is K 133 "Prüfverfahren und Beurteilung der Brandgefahr von elektronischen Produkten und Isolierstoffen" ("Fire hazard testing of electronic products and insulating material") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
