Surface acoustic wave (SAW) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) duplexers of assessed quality - Part 1: Generic specification (IEC 62604-1:2015); German version EN 62604-1:2015

Title (German)

Oberflächenwellen-(OFW-) und Volumenwellen-(BAW-)Duplexer mit bewerteter Qualität - Teil 1: Fachgrundspezifikation (IEC 62604-1:2015); Deutsche Fassung EN 62604-1:2015

Overview

This part of IEC 62604 specifies the methods of test and general requirements for SAW and BAW duplexers of assessed quality using either capability approval or qualification approval procedures. By way of introduction, general terms are defined for the application of this document. A surface acoustic wave (SAW) is an acoustic wave that propagates along the surface of an elastic substrate and whose amplitude decreases exponentially with distance from the surface. A surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter is a filter based on one or more surface acoustic wave transmission line or resonant elements, where the surface wave is typically generated by an interdigital transducer and propagates along a material surface. A bulk acoustic wave (BAW) is an acoustic wave that propagates inside an elastic material, traversing the entire thickness of the bulk. A bulk acoustic wave (BAW) filter is a filter based on bulk acoustic waves, usually generated by a pair of electrodes, propagating along a thickness direction. A thin-film volume wave resonator (FBAR) is a thin-film BAW resonator consisting of a piezoelectric layer sandwiched between two electrode layers with stress-free top and bottom surfaces, mechanically supported at the edges by a substrate with a cavity structure or with a membrane structure. A solidly mounted resonator (SMR) is a BAW resonator in which the electrode/piezoelectric layer/electrode structure is supported by a sequence of additional thin films of alternately low and high acoustic impedance, whose thicknesses correspond to a quarter of the wavelength and which act as acoustic reflectors and decouple the resonator acoustically from the supporting substrate. A duplexer is a device used in the frequency division duplex system, which enables signal to be received and transmitted through a common antenna simultaneously. A diplexer is a device which separates composite signals into two parts of two frequency domains. A diplexer can be used to combine signals in two frequency domains into composite signals, in reverse. The TX filter is used in a transmitter part to eliminate unnecessary signals. It is a basic part of a duplexer. The RX filter is used in a receiver part to eliminate unnecessary signals. It is a basic part of a duplexer. Surface acoustic wave and bulk acoustic wave duplexers shall be clearly and durably marked with the model designation as indicated in the detail specification, nominal frequency in megahertz (MHz), year and week of manufacture, mark of conformity (unless a certificate of conformity is used), factory identification code, manufacturer's name or trademark, and terminal identification (if applicable) in the order indicated. Other markings, such as electrical terminal designation (if applicable), serial number (if applicable), and surface mounted device classification (if applicable) may be used for marking if deemed necessary. Two procedures are available for the recognition of SAW and BAW duplexers with assessed quality: capability approval and design approval. Capability approval is appropriate when structurally similar SAW and BAW duplexers based on common design rules are fabricated by a group of common processes. Within the scope of capability approval, design specifications are divided into three categories. In the case of the capability qualifying component (CQC), a design specification shall be prepared for each CQC in consultation with the national inspection body. It shall identify the purpose of the CQC and include all relevant stress levels and test limits. In the case of standard catalog items, a component is offered as a standard catalog item in accordance with the procedure for approval of capability. For this purpose, a detail specification complying with the blank detail specification shall be written. For custom built SAW and BAW duplexers the content of the detail specification shall be by agreement between the manufacturer and the customer in accordance with IEC QC 001002-3. Further information on design specifications is contained in the sectional specification. The product and capability qualifying components (CQCs) are tested in combination and approval given to a manufacturing facility on the basis of validated design rules, processes and quality control procedures. Qualification approval is appropriate for components manufactured to a standard design and established production process and conforming to a published detail specification. The programme of tests defined in the detail specification for the appropriate assessment and severity level applies directly to the SAW or BAW duplexer to be qualified. The chapter on test and measurement procedures also deals with the test and measurement conditions, visual inspection, dimensional inspection, electrical test procedures, mechanical and environmental test procedures and endurance test procedures.
