Fixed capacitors for use in electronic equipment - Part 20: Sectional specification - Fixed metallized polyphenylene sulfide film dielectric surface mount d.c. capacitors (IEC 60384-20:2015); German version EN 60384-20:2015
Festkondensatoren zur Verwendung in Geräten der Elektronik - Teil 20: Rahmenspezifikation - Oberflächenmontierbare Festkondensatoren für Gleichspannung mit metallisierter Polyphenyl-Sulfid-Folie als Dielektrikum (IEC 60384-20:2015); Deutsche Fassung EN 60384-20:2015
Overview
This part of IEC 60384 applies to fixed surface mount capacitors for direct current, with metallized electrodes and polyphenylene sulfide dielectric for use in electronic equipment. These capacitors have metallized connecting pads or soldering strips and are intended to be mounted directly onto substrates for hybrid circuits or onto printed boards. They may have "self-healing properties" depending on conditions of use and are primarily intended for applications where the a.c. component is small with respect to the rated voltage. This standard specifies the preferred ratings and characteristics for the type of capacitor described, selects from IEC 60384-1 the appropriate quality evaluation procedures, tests, and measurement methods, and gives general requirements for operating performance. In detail specifications referencing this sectional specification, the severity of tests and requirements shall be at least equal to those specified in this specification; weaker ones are not permitted. These capacitors are divided to 3 grades. Performance grade 1 for long life, performance grade 2 for general purpose and performance grade 3 for miniature type. Capacitors for radio interference suppression are not included, but are covered by IEC 60384-14. Capacitors used for motor or fluorescent lamp are outside the scope of this standard. The terms specified in IEC 60384-1 apply for the application of this document. In addition, the standard defines capacitors of performance grade 1 (increased requirements), which are capacitors for applications with a long service life and more stringent requirements for the electrical characteristics, capacitors of performance grade 2 (general requirements), these are capacitors for general applications where the more stringent requirements for capacitors of performance grade 1 are not necessary, and capacitors of performance grade 3 (low power, miniature design), these are capacitors of miniature design which have a rated voltage lower than 63 V and for which lower requirements than those of performance grade 2 are acceptable. The Preferred Ratings and Characteristics chapter identifies preferred ratings and quality evaluation procedures. The Quality Assessment Procedures chapter covers the primary fabrication level, structurally similar components, confirmed test reports on approved lots, and type approval, supplemented by tables showing the fixed sample size test plan for type approval - evaluation level EZ, the test plan for type approval, and the lot-by-lot tests. The chapter on test and measurement procedures supplements the information in IEC 60384-1, Clause 4. Covered are assembly, visual inspection and control of dimensions, and electrical tests, supplemented by tables of periodic tests, test voltages, dissipation factor limits, insulation resistance requirements, and correction factor for test temperature. Other topics include shear testing, end-face coating adhesion, solderability, rapid temperature cycling, endurance testing, supplemented by a table of endurance testing for capacitors of performance grades 1, 2, and 3, and charging and discharging. The responsible committee is DKE/K 611 "Kondensatoren" ("Condensers") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
