Medium power transformers 50 Hz, with highest voltage for equipment not exceeding 36 kV - Part 1: General requirements; German version EN 50588-1:2015
Mittelleistungstransformatoren 50 Hz, mit einer höchsten Spannung für Betriebsmittel nicht über 36 kV - Teil 1: Allgemeine Anforderungen; Deutsche Fassung EN 50588-1:2015
Overview
This European Standard has been prepared under the mandate of the European Commission (EC) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) for the implementation of European Directive 2009/125/EC. It applies to three-phase power transformers from 5 kVA to 40 000 kVA, intended for continuous indoor and outdoor operation, for 50 Hz and equipped with two windings with a maximum voltage for equipment of 1.1 kV ≤ Um ≤ 36 kV and at least one winding with a maximum voltage for equipment below 3.6 kV. It will replace European Standards EN 50464-1:2007 and EN 50541-1:2011 and includes several significant technical changes. European Standard EN 50588-1 deals with liquid-filled transformers and dry-type transformers in only one document. The scope of the transformers is extended in terms of rated power; new values are specified for no-load and short-circuit losses, as well as for sound power levels at different values of the rated voltage. The principle of Peak Efficiency Index (PEI) is introduced for transformers with rated power higher than 3 150 kVA. Transformers with tap changers (DETC or OLTC) are also included in this standard, even if they have separate windings to form the taps. This European Standard specifies the requirements regarding the electrical characteristics and design of medium power transformers. The following transformers are excluded from this standard: - transformers that do not have windings with a maximum voltage for equipment of more than 1.1 kV; - instrument transformers; - traction transformers mounted on vehicles; - starting transformers; - test transformers; - arc welding transformers; - transformers for deep water applications; - medium voltage coupling transformers up to 5 MVA; - transformers for converter applications; - furnace transformers; - transformers for offshore applications; - transformers for mobile emergency use; - transformers and autotransformers for railroad feeding systems; - grounding transformers; - explosion-proof and mining transformers. The responsible committee is Subcommittee DKE/UK 321.2 "Transformatoren, Leistungen und Abmessungen" ("Transformers, performances and dimensions") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
