Overview
The data exchange format defined in IEC 62714 (AutomationML) is a data format based on an XML schema, which was developed with the aim of supporting the exchange of data between engineering tools in a heterogeneous engineering tool landscape. IEC 62714-2 provides an overview of the format. The goal of AutomationML is to connect engineering tools of the existing heterogeneous tool landscape in their different disciplines; for example, mechanical and plant engineering, electrical design, process engineering, process control engineering, HMI development, PLC programming, robot programming and so on. AutomationML stores engineering information following the object-oriented paradigm and allows the modelling of real plant components as data objects in which different aspects are encapsulated. An object can consist of other sub-objects, but can also be part of a larger compilation or aggregation. Typical objects in plant automation include information on topology, geometry, kinematics and logic, while logic includes sequence, behaviour and control. AutomationML combines existing industry data formats that are used to store and exchange different aspects of engineering data. These standards are used within their own specifications as they are ("as is") and are not branched for requirements related to AutomationML. The core of AutomationML is the top level data format CAEX, which connects the different data formats. For this reason AutomationML has an inherently distributed document architecture. The responsible committee is DKE/K 941 "Engineering" ("Engineering") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
