Overview
This standard is the German version of European Standard EN 61000-4-5:2014 and identical to the third edition of International Standard IEC 61000-4-5 (2014 edition). It describes surge immunity testing of electric and electronic equipment, appliances and devices (surge voltages and currents). Such phenomena may be generated switching operations or as a consequence of lightning strikes and may cause not only disturbance of the functionality of equipment, appliances and devices but also damages to internal components and may consequently lead to loss of function. For the purpose of immunity testing, recommended test severities (test levels), specifications regarding the test equipment (test generator, coupling/decoupling networks), test setup, test procedure, determination of test results and test report are given. The impulse definitions applied are the 1,2/50 µs voltage impulse and the 8/20 µs current impulse and, specifically for testing telecommunication ports outside buildings, the 1,2/50 µs voltage impulse and the 5/320 µs current impulse. Specifications regarding the latter are to be found in the new Annex A of this standard. Information on the selection of the adequate test generator and the test severities (test levels) are given in Annex B and information on different test aspects are given in Annex C. The test levels are related to different ambient and installation conditions. Further new Annexes have been prepared containing information on measures to ensure the immunity of equipment intended to be connected to low-voltage grids (Annex D), on the mathematic modelling of the impulse forms considered in this standard (Annex E), on the measurement uncertainty in relation to the adjustment of test disturbance level (Annex F), on the calibration of impulse measurement systems (Annex G) and on the treatment of lines designed for rated currents exceeding 200 A (Annex H). Furthermore, a number of additions has been introduced in the specification part of the standard, and the standard has been partially restructured. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 767.3 "Hochfrequente Störgrößen" ("High-frequency disturbances") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
