Overview
This part of the standard series DIN IEC 61577 (VDE 0493-1-10) covers the specific requirements for the testing of instruments measuring the activity concentration of airborne 222Rn and 220Rn outdoors, in dwellings, and at workplaces including underground mines. The standard applies practically to all types of electronic measuring instruments that are based on either spot or continuous measurements. The activity concentration can be measured by pumping or by diffusing the air containing 222Rn and/or 220Rn into the sensitive volume of the detection unit or at a particular moment by taking an air sample (grab sampling). The following modifications have been made with respect to DIN IEC 61577-2:2001-09: a) requirements and test methods regarding the radiation detection performance have been introduced; b) requirements and test methods regarding the influence of environmental conditions have been introduced; c) requirements and test methods regarding electrical and mechanical characteristics have been aligned with other standards on radon and radon decay product measuring instruments for harmonization purposes. Instructions for the use of these radon and radon decay product measuring instruments are to be found in the standards of the series DIN ISO 11665 (VDE 0493-1). The committee responsible is DKE/GUK 967.2 "Aktivitätsmessgeräte für den Strahlenschutz" ("Activity meters for radiation protection") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
