Overview
This standard specifies the general characteristics and test methods for portable or transportable photon spectrometry assemblies for evaluating radiation, electrical, mechanical, safety and environmental characteristics specific to the applications. Advice is also provided in annexes as to the calibration, appropriate use and interpretation of the system for in situ measurements. These photon spectrometry assemblies are equipped with a high purity germanium (HPGe) detector to survey, in situ, generally at 1 m above ground level, areas in the environment for discrete radionuclides. Such equipment is used to make assessments of activity levels and corresponding free air exposure rates from photon emitting radionuclides. Such measurements can also be used to develop guidance for subsequent follow-up action, for example including radiological assessments, sampling and monitoring programmes. Instructions for the use of the systems described in this standard are given in DIN ISO 18589-7 (VDE 00493-4-5897). The responsible committee is DKE/GUK 967.2 "Aktivitätsmessgeräte für den Strahlenschutz" ("Activity measuring instruments for radiation protection") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
