Overview
The standard DIN EN 60950-1 (VDE 0805-1) is applicable to mains-powered or battery-powered information technology equipment, including electrical business equipment and associated equipment, with a rated voltage not exceeding 600 V. Regardless of the source of power, the standard is also applicable to such information technology equipment designed and constructed for use as telecommunication terminal equipment and telecommunication network infrastructure equipment or designed and intended to be connected directly to, or used as infrastructure equipment in a cable distribution system, regardless of the source of power or designed to use the ac mains supply as a communication transmission medium. The consolidated version DIN EN 60950-1 (VDE 0805-1) includes numerous changes and supplements from which only the major ones can be mentioned. The specifications for humidity conditioning, clearances in the primary circuit and ac mains supply cords have been changed. The method for testing the electric strength and the electric pulse test has been added. Moreover, the standard specifies requirements for the protection against excessive sound pressure with PORTABLE AUDIOSYSTEMS worn near the ear. Furthermore, it specifies requirements for headphones and earphones intended to be used with PORTABLE AUDIOSYSTEMS. The requirements only apply to music or video operation. Examples are portable hand held or body worn mini disc players or CD players, MP3 audio players, mobile phones with additional MP3 function, PDA or equivalent devices. The responsible body is DKE/K 711 "Sicherheit elektronischer Einrichtungen für Audio/Video-, Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik" ("Security of electronic facilities for audio/video, information and communication technology") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
