Components for low-voltage surge protective devices - Part 312: Selection and application principles for gas discharge tubes (IEC 61643-312:2013 + corrigendum Jul. 2013); German version EN 61643-312:2013
Bauelemente für Überspannungsschutzgeräte für Niederspannung - Teil 312: Auswahl- und Anwendungsprinzipien für Gasentladungsableiter (IEC 61643-312:2013 + corrigendum Jul. 2013); Deutsche Fassung EN 61643-312:2013
Overview
This standard contains the German version of European Standard EN 61643-313:2013 and is identical with International Standard IEC 61643-313. It describes selection and application principles for gas discharge tubes (surge arresters, gas-filled, GDT) having two or three electrodes. Such devices are intended for the protection of applications up to 1 000 V ac or 1 500 V dc in communication or signalling circuits and consist of a gap or series of gaps in a hermetically enclosed discharge medium other than air. The selection and application principles for gas discharge tubes specified in this standard include a description of the surge arrester construction - they consist of two or more metallic electrodes that are separated by gap(s) in a hermetically sealed envelope - giving guidance in order to achieve optimum characteristics; furthermore, a description of the surge arrester function, that is, of the implemented protection principle to prevent that the electrical strength of an electrical system with associated spark-over is exceeded, its operating mode and its response behaviour in case of overvoltages and the application of gas discharge tubes for protection of various lines or applications such as phone/fax/modem, cable TV and ac supply lines. In this case, fail-short (failsafe) is also taken into account. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 767.6 "Schutz von Einrichtungen der Informationstechnik gegen Überspannungen und niederfrequente Felder" ("Protection of information technology equipment against overvoltage and low-frequency fields") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
