Optical fibre cables - Part 7: Fire-resistant cables for data communication - Sectional specification
Abstract
The demand for applications using cables capable of maintaining optical circuit integrity and data transmission under fire is under growth. Current standards address mainly the "optical signal continuity" protection issue but additional important parameters have not been addressed. This part of IEC 60794 refers to cables as described in IEC 60794 Parts 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 or IEC 62807-1, (cables containing elements as described in IEC 60794) which are required to maintain both circuit integrity and data transmission capability when subjected to fire under specified conditions. In addition to the basic cable construction, it describes the means of sample preparation, inspection arrangements, provides the performance requirement, including a recommended flame application time. Additionally, it provides directions to evaluate the data transmission capability during and after subjecting the cable to fire and the parameters that should be specified in the detail specification n. The cables covered by this document are intended to operate with light sources and nominal wavelengths normally encountered in communication systems. For the purpose of this standard, fire conditions as currently listed in IEC 60331-25 Ed. 1.0 and basic test apparatus are as per IEC 60331-1, IEC 60331-2 and IEC 60331-11. As the test method according to IEC 60331-25:1999 will not be developed further, other test methods might be used or added in future editions of this standard. IEC 60332-1 and IEC 60331-2 will be added in a future revision as the standard test method and test rig to be used for all testing of fire-resistance of optical fibre cables. Throughout this standard the wording “optical cable” may also include optical fibre units, microduct fibre units, etc. See IEC 60794-1-2 for general requirements and definitions and for a complete reference guide to test methods of all types.
