Industrial networks - Single-drop digital communication interface - Part 2: Functional safety extensions (IEC 61139-2:2022); English version EN IEC 61139-2:2022
Abstract
Functional safety communications across standard fieldbuses is a well-established technology and standardized in the IEC 61784-3 series ("FSCPs"). Safety device designers have the possibility to either integrate such fieldbus FSCPs or stay with "classic" interfaces such as digital or analogue inputs and outputs (0 to 24 V, OSSD, 4 to 20 mA, etc.). Since these classic interfaces are supported by most of the fieldbuses/FSCPs through remote I/O terminals it is possible to avoid a broad model range. However, safety devices, connected these classic ways, are missing digitalization and the chance to participate in new trends such as Internet-of-Things or Industry 4.0. This is, where IO-Link Safety comes into play. Instead of I/O modules, FS-Masters build gateways to the various fieldbuses/FSCPs and provide ports for point-to-point communication with FS-Devices. Dual mode communications (OSSD or IO-Link Safety) allow for easy migration from classic interfaces to the world of IO-Link. The plain and powerful protocol has been designed according to IEC 61784-3 and following the black channel principle. The bidirectional communication of IO-Link Safety now allows for multi-sensor and combined actuator-sensor devices ("safety mechatronics"), thus fulfilling requirements of smart manufacturing. IO-Link Safety can be used for applications up to SIL3 (IEC 61508) or PL "e" (ISO 13849). The concept has been approved by TÜV-SÜD and IFA. This document specifies a lean functional safety communication protocol for small functional safety sensors and actuators as well as mechatronic components including connectivity of OSSD type safety sensors (FS-Devices) following the migration paradigm of IO-Link. This document does not cover communication for multi-point or multi-drop linkages, or integration of IO-Link Safety into upper level systems such as fieldbuses/FSCPs, which is the responsibility of the particular FSCP organization.
