Protection of telecommunication lines using metallic symmetric conductors against lightning-induced surges

Abstract

Recommendation K.46:2012-05 of the Internationalen Telecommunication Union ITU-T. It describes a procedure for the evaluation of the protection of telecommunication lines using metallic symmetric conductors (i.e. twisted pair cables) against overvoltages and overcurrents imposed on the lines due to nearby lightning flashes. Hereby buried and aerial lines are taken into account. The described calculation procedure allows the assessment of the expected annual number of damages and the risk of damage due to indirect lightning flashes. The calculated risk can be used in order to evaluate the need of implementing additional protection measures on the line. Together with the parallel Draft DIN VDE 0845-1-2 (VDE 0845-1-2) this draft intends to replace DIN EN 61663-2 (VDE 0845-4-2):2002-07. EN 61663-2 was withdrawn as result of the re-structuring of the International and European standards in the field of the lightning and overvoltage protection of telecommunikation lines. The subject was deleted from the scope of IEC/TC 81 or CLC/TC 81X, respectively, according to this re-structuring while it was taken over by ITU-T.
