Eicher Leadership Award for its excellent technical work. The award, which was first presented in 2003, is named after Dr. Lawrence D. Eicher who served as ISO Secretary General from 1986 to 2002. The "LDE award" is presented to ISO technical committees (TC) or subcommittees (SC) who have shown great leadership, use innovative approaches and promote the involvement of developing countries. DIN helps support the IT sector New German IT Security Act requires state-of-the-art measures

( 2015-07-01 )  The German Bundestag passed the new IT Security Act in mid-June of this year. The aim of the Act is to considerably improve IT security in Germany, for example by obliging providers of "critical infrastructures" ("CI providers"), such as energy, telecommunications, or water, to maintain a minimum level of IT security. Also, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is to be notified of all IT security incidents; failure to do so will incur a heavy fine. According to the Act, providers are to implement adequate organizational and technical "state of the art" precautions to protect their IT systems. Standards and specifications (in most cases international ones) will be useful for determining this state of the art. With its well-proven structures and processes, DIN is also expressly referred to in the Act as a national standards body and member of European and international standards organizations, and as a platform of cooperation between the State and CI ... DIN and SAC agree on closer cooperation 3rd meeting of German-Chinese Working Group on Electromobility

( 2015-02-09 )  The third meeting of the sub-working group on electromobility of the German-Chinese Standardization Cooperation Commission was held in Beijing on the 5th and 6th of February 2015. The meeting addressed current issues and forms of cooperation in areas such as vehicle safety, charging systems and batteries. Discussions focussed on international cooperation and the coordination of mirrored activities at national level, and elicited great interest and an active exchange of ideas among the experts. During the meeting SAC and DIN agreed on cooperation in various technical areas, including a detailed specification of requirements ensuring interoperability between charging stations and vehicles. It was agreed that the next steps to be taken - such as establishing responsibilities and prioritizing subjects - will be decided on during the coming weeks. The agreement also included regular communication between DIN and SAC as regards any changes to their respective standardization systems. More

ASME refers to ISO welding standard ISO 9606-1 on the qualification of welders will also apply in the US

( 2015-02-04 )  For the first time ever, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has referred to an ISO welding standard in its pressure vessel code. The new July 2015 edition of Section IX "Welding and Brazing Qualifications" of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) will refer to ISO 9606-1:2012 "Qualification testing of welders - Fusion welding - Part 1: Steels" in its Appendix ZZZ. It will also cite ISO 14732:2013 on the "Qualification testing of welding operators and weld setters for mechanized and automatic welding of metallic materials". In Germany the latter standard is published as DIN EN ISO 14732. This means that, in terms of the qualification of welders and welding operators, the two ISO Standards can be considered as being equivalent to the ASME Code and thus apply in the US as well. This will be a great advantage for many European and international companies. Up until now, in order to gain a foothold on the US market European welding specialists had to obtain ... More
